The International Day of Yoga, proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the United Nations in 2014, is now observed in nearly 190 countries, reflecting its transformation into a global wellness movement. The initiative continues to emphasize yoga as a unifying practice that transcends borders and cultures.
In India, large-scale preparations have been undertaken to mark the occasion. These include a Guinness World Record achievement featuring 435,831 live viewers participating in a yoga streaming event, dedicated sessions conducted within armed forces establishments, and nationwide programmes leading up to the main celebration. The culmination of these events will see Prime Minister Modi leading a major gathering at Kolkata’s Red Road, which is expected to draw large crowds and connect approximately 2,500 global locations in a synchronized observance.
The sequence of events reflects the growing international footprint of yoga and reinforces India’s central role in promoting the discipline as a global instrument of health, unity, and well-being.
